Tears and More Tears

May 20, 2009 – Day 140

A box of Kleenex seems to have found a permanent home on the table in our team's small boardroom. Its presence is indicative of the events we've experienced at work thus far this year.

Our most recent sadness is dealing with the news that Holly, one of our lawyers (and one of my favourite), was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Holly's cancer was detected through a mammogram a couple weeks ago. She goes for an MRI next week and surgery on June 9th. Chemo and radiation will follow and she'll be away for most of the remainder of the year. As hard as it will be for Holly to go through the steps ahead, she has the reassurance that the cancer was detected early and trusts that she will make a full recovery. Our team at work is close knit and we are really going to miss her while she's away.

Holly has been encouraging her female family members, friends and co-workers to go for their mammograms and I in turn am encouraging all of you (women) to go for yours as well - they are very important!

(I am using Holly's name and experience with her permission in my journalling today)

  1. I sure will keep Holly in my prayers Jewel, it's a good thing that they caught this early, Holly has a great chance of fighting this, and yes mamograms are extremely important, as well as paps.

  3. That is really unfortunate. What a rough year for you at work! You know what this means? It is only going to get better from here!

  4. Actually one of the lawyers on the team had more bad news today. She came to my desk at 1:00 to tell me her dad is missing. The police were out looking for him - with dogs. The dogs lost his scent but many volunteers went out to look for him in the bush (which is where he went missing on Sunday)...not sure why nobody was telling the family before today except maybe the wife thought he'd come home.

She came back to my desk at 3:00 to tell me they found him - found his body. He took his own life. He was 60. So she left work to head up to High Prairie with her husband to be with her family.

What's going on? This is crazy! Hopefully it will only get better from here!
